I recall reading that under certain conditions the air in Salt Lake City is “smoggier” than in Beijing (https://gregjonesorg.wordpress.com/2014/04/15/on-some-days-and-by-some-measures-salt-lake-city-is-smoggier-than-beijing/).  I am not sure how often that is the case, or to what extent the same is true of other cities, but it is alarming, nonetheless.
