“Bud Grant wore a golf shirt to the frigid Vikings game, is tougher than all of us”

I remember when his Vikings teams used to play in an outdoor stadium, he would not allow his players to wear extra cold weather gear during games.  Tough teams.

My family lived in a Minnesota for about year during my childhood.  Watching those Vikings teams hosting cold weather games always impressed me, including images of groundskeepers using a flame thrower device to clear portions of the field, most critically the lines on the field.

This video about the demolition of the old Metropolitan Stadium, where those games, were played, shows some of these cold weather conditions.  At about 3 minutes 35 seconds into the film there is footage of the flame thrower being used.  There is also a brief clip of Vikings Hall of Famer Mike Tingelhoff joking that while Bud Grant would not allow his players to wear cold weather gear, he secretly knew that Bud Grant was wearing thermal underwear.
