Excerpt from article: “Ankara, Turkey • A Turkish court overseeing the case of a doctor accused of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ruled that a committee of experts should assess whether the fictional Lord of the Rings character Gollum is good or bad.”
So, at one point I was surrounded by colleagues who had read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books multiple times, who had viewed The Lord of the Rings films multiple times, who were simply steeped in this stuff, even using this lore when teaching at church. One guy even read (actually re-read) one or more of the books while driving (driving, not riding) to and from work – – his commute probably averaged about 45 minutes each way.
To reach out to these colleagues, I broke down and read all the books (I had made it through only one of the movies), and by the time I was done it seems the conversation had finally moved on. It was just as well – – the books never really resonated with me.
With all that in mind, my general impression is that being compared to Gollum is not a good thing – – but I could be wrong.
