Why critics of the Iran deal should hope Obama is like Neville Chamberlain

Excerpts:  In this regard, Obama is no Neville Chamberlain: The president and his aides have not promised a peaceful Iran in our time — just no Iranian nukes. Even while arguing that this deal is the best bet on the nuclear front, they acknowledge that Iran’s support for violent anti-Israel, anti-American and anti-Sunni proxies will likely continue, and possibly increase . . .  Ironically, now that there is a deal, these worried allies could do a lot worse than Neville Chamberlain. While the British prime minister seems destined to be forever ridiculed for naively believing Hitler could be satiated, often forgotten or ignored is what came next. Once Germany’s invasion of Poland made clear his colossal misjudgment, Chamberlain did not run away from his mistake. He took England to war and then, in order to secure the formation of a unity government, eventually stepped down to make way for Churchill and became a member of the War Cabinet.

Obama’s Nuclear Deal with Iran: Worse than We Could Have Imagined
Read more at: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/421289/iran-nuclear-deal-obama-risky

Excerpt: . . . Iran will be flush with cash, legitimized as a normal international actor in good standing, recognized (as Obama once said) as “a very successful regional power.” Stopping Iran from going nuclear at that point will be infinitely more difficult and risky. Which is Obama’s triumph. He has locked in his folly. He has laid down his legacy and we will have to live with the consequences for decades.

Commentary Magazine:  Iran Can No Longer Be Contained

Update (20150721)

WSJ:  The Iran Deal’s Collapsing Rationale – – Blowing up the Middle East in order to save it—that’s the logic at work.

Excerpt:

If, in a worst-case scenario, Iran violates the deal,” [President Obama] said last week, “the same options that are available to me today will be available to any U.S. president in the future.”

Here the claim is false by the president’s own admission. The promise of the deal is that it is supposed to give the world at least a year’s notice that Iran is seeking a bomb. But once the terms of the deal expire, so does the notice period. “At that point,” Mr. Obama acknowledged to NPR’s Steve Inskeep, “the breakout times would have shrunk almost down to zero.” That’s not true today.

[A] future president ordering airstrikes against Iran would do so against an adversary that can shoot American planes out of the skies. That’s also not true today.

WSJ:  The Lawless Underpinnings of the Iran Nuclear Deal – – The Obama end-run around the Constitution could yet be blocked if states exercise their own sanctions regimes.

Excerpt: For now, though, we are left with another reminder from the administration that brought ObamaCare: Constitutional shortcuts almost invariably lead to bad policy outcomes.

Update (20150729)

WSJ:  Israel’s Choice: Conventional War Now, or Nuclear War Later – – There was no ‘better deal’ with Iran to be had. Now this calamitous one offers Tehran two paths to the bomb.

Excerpt:  The brutal truth is that the actual alternatives before us are not Mr. Obama’s deal or war. They are conventional war now or nuclear war later. John Kerry recently declared that Israel would be making a “huge mistake” to take military action against Iran. But Mr. Kerry, as usual, is spectacularly wrong. Israel would not be making a mistake at all, let alone a huge one. On the contrary, it would actually be sparing itself—and the rest of the world—a nuclear conflagration in the not too distant future.

Update (20150730)

WSJ: The Syria Sham and the Iran Deal – Syria cheated on its chemical commitments. Iran will cheat on its nuclear ones. Obama provides cover for both.

Excerpt:  The CIA now admits that Syria retains significant quantities of its deadliest chemical weapons. When Mr. Obama announced the Syria deal, he warned that he would use military force in the event that Mr. Assad failed to honor his promises. The threat was hollow then. It is laughable now. What ties the Syrian sham to the Iranian one is an American president bent on conjuring political illusions at home at the expense of strategic facts abroad, his weakness apparent to everyone but himself.

8 Things Obama Got Wrong on the Iran Deal

Krauthammer:  Just who is helping Iran’s hard-liners?

Excerpt: Snapback sanctions? Everyone knows that once the international sanctions are lifted, they are never coming back. Moreover, consider the illogic of President Obama’s argument. The theme of his American University speech Wednesday was that the only alternative to what he brought back from Vienna is war because sanctions — even the more severe sanctions that Congress has been demanding — will never deter the Iranians. But if sanctions don’t work, how can you argue that the Iranians will now be deterred from cheating by the threat of . . . sanctions? Snapback sanctions, mind you, that will inevitably be weaker and more loophole-ridden than the existing ones.
